MAIZE VIRAL DISEASES

A commonly sporadically distributed in maize and transmitted through insects.

Taxonomy: Virus`s. Common names: Maize Streak Virus/ MSV/ Maize Dwarf Virus.

Description: Small yellow specs (pix-elated) on the leaves that can sometimes be distributed in streaks. Maize plants can some times be stunted in size. In a field infected plants are typically randomly/sporadically distributed.

Lifecycle: The virus gets transmitted predominantly through Leaf hoppers and Aphids.

Monitoring remarks: Identify sporadic nature of yellowing stunted plants in a field.

Action threshold: Often the virus does not effect a great percentage of the field, however monitor pest thresholds and control if nescassary.

Control general remarks: There is no viracide that can cure an infected plant, although Kobe can prevent viruses from spreading. In most cases it is most cost effective to use insecticides to inhibit the spread of the disease.
