QUELEA / BIRDS

Common pests in cereal crops that have grain exposed

Description: According to African soil health (link) the red-billed quelea is a small brown weaver bird that can occur in large flocks. They are the world’s most abundant wild bird and only found in Africa, especially in semi-arid zones. They are seed-eaters, both of wild grasses and cereals such as sorghum, rice and wheat, but also eat insects, including pests of crops.

Monitoring remarks: Crops are most vulnerable at milk-doe grain growth stage.

Action threshold: Bird deterrents should be used as a preventative measure from early grain development.

Control general remarks: Use bird shield and or mechanical methods of bird scaring. Bird shield is a bird deterent which does not kill the birds.
