White fly

A common sucking pest that transmits diseases to plants

Taxonomy order: Hemiptera
Description: Adults (1/16 inch long) are moth looking insects with white wings and short antenna. They are easily recognized and often found near the tops of plants or on stem ends. Wingless nymphs are flattened, oval and almost scale-like in appearance.   Distribution on the plant: After the first instar, or crawler stage, they settle down and attach themselves to the underside of leaves and begin feeding.
Lifecycle: very rapid reproduction 
Determent to crops: Sapsucking weakening plants and transmitting plant virus.
Monitoring remarks: Scout manually, look on the underside of the leaves or shake the plant to see if any fly off. There are no pheromone products for monitoring purposes.
Action threshold: Suppress when seen.
Control general remarks: Systemic products can be most effective. Alternate with differnent chemical groups with differnt modes of action to reduce the chance of chemical resistance.
